2018-2019 AUDITIONS

PYO_Auditions_Fall 2018Auditions for new members (or for current members who wish to move to another group) will be held on September 20th from 5 to 8:30pm at Gildersleeve Middle School.  To schedule an audition time, please email our Orchestra Manager at info@peninsulayouthorchestra.com.  The Orchestra Manager will email an application form that you will need to complete and bring to your audition.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

SINFONIA (meets Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00pm at Gildersleeve Middle School)

The Sinfonia is a string orchestra comprised of young musicians who have had at least one year of performance experience on their instrument.  Students in this group must be able to demonstrate basic rhythm and note reading skills.

  1. A short (1-2 minute) Prepared Piece (Level II-IV) of your choice.  Please provide a copy of your piece for the conductors.
  2. Scales (to be selected from the following:  C, G, D, & F major).  Scales should be performed 1-2 octaves at quarter note = 120.
  3. Sight reading

WIND ENSEMBLE (meets Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00pm at Gildersleeve Middle School)

The Wind Ensemble is a new group for woodwind, brass, and percussion players who have had at least one year of performance experience on their instrument.  Students in this group must be able to demonstrate basic rhythm and note reading skills.

Brass and Woodwinds
  1. A short (1-2 minute) Prepared Piece (Level II-IV) of your choice.  Please provide a copy of your piece for the conductors.
  2. Scales (to be selected from the following:  concert Bb, Eb, F, & C major).  Scales should be performed 1-2 octaves at quarter note = 120.
  3. Sight reading
Percussion
  1. Perform two excerpts or rudiments (5 stroke roll, Paradiddle, Flam Tap) on at least two of the following instruments:  snare drum, timpani, xylophone.  Please provide a copy of your prepared excerpt for the conductors.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (meets Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30pm at Gildersleeve Middle School)

Members of the Symphony Orchestra must demonstrate technical proficiency on their instruments and must have an understanding of the maturity and dedication required to rehearse and perform orchestral repertoire of an advanced level.

Strings
  1. A short (2-3 minute) Prepared Piece (Level IV or higher) of your choice.  Please provide a copy of your piece for the conductors.
  2. Scales (to be selected from the following:  C, G, D, A, E, & F major; A & D minor).  Scales should be played at least 2 octaves (3 octaves is preferable) at quarter note = 120.
  3. Sight reading
Brass and Woodwinds
  1. A short (2-3 minute) Prepared Piece (Level IV or higher) of your choice.  Please provide a copy of your piece for the conductors.
  2. Scales (to be selected from the following:  concert C, G, D, A, F, Bb, & Eb major; chromatic scale).  Scales should be played at least 2 octaves (woodwinds may choose to play 3 octaves) at EIGHTH note = 100.
  3. Sight reading
Percussion
  1. Perform two excerpts or rudiments of your choice on at least two of the following instruments:  snare drum, timpani, xylophone.  Please provide a copy of your prepared excerpt for the conductors.
